Instructor Caitlin giving a wheel throwing demo to a group at Claya in RiNo, Denver

What Happens at a Try the Pottery Wheel Night

Want to try the pottery wheel in Denver without signing up for six weeks? Claya’s Try the Pottery Wheel night is made for that. One evening, real clay, a friendly teacher, and your first mugs or bowls, right in RiNo’s big, bright studio.

No experience needed. You show up curious; we walk you through the first moves on the wheel.

What a Try the Pottery Wheel night looks like

Sessions run about two and a half hours, 6–8:30 PM on Friday and Saturday evenings. You’ll wedge a bit of clay, practice centering, open the form, and pull walls into something that feels like yours, usually a small mug or bowl. Groups stay small so you get real help, not a crowded demo from across the room.

  • $75 per person
  • Clay, tools, and guidance included
  • About two and a half hours on the wheel
  • We glaze your finished piece and call or email you when it’s ready, usually about two weeks later
  • Pickup at 3440 Walnut Street in Denver’s RiNo Arts District

Who this night is perfect for

Come if you want a low-commitment first taste of the wheel. It’s a lovely solo treat, a creative hang with a friend, or a warm-up before a longer class. You’ll leave having actually thrown something, not just watched someone else do it.

It is not a multi-week course. You won’t cover trimming, handles, and a full glaze library the way an intro series does. That’s the point: one fun night, then decide if you want more.

Ready for more after you try?

Plenty of people fall in love with the wheel and keep going. When you’re ready:

  • Intro to Wheel Throwing: six weeks, $300–$325. The Wednesday 6:15–8:45 PM session with Emili Kaiman (in session now) is sold out; the next open session is Friday 12–2:30 PM with Jesse ($300, starts October 30), and Monday daytime 12–2:30 PM All Levels with Mary (Nov 9–Dec 14, $300) is also open. Monday evening 6–8:30 PM with Mary (starts November 9) is sold out.
  • Studio Membership: Extended Founding at $140/month with a 2-month minimum, your own shelf in RiNo, and member glaze firing free through December 31, 2026 (then 500 cu-in/month free, $0.04/cu-in overage; bisque always free).

Prefer a seasonal one-nighter instead? See one-night workshops for what is next. Private lessons for one to three people are $70 per person per hour; groups of four or more can book a private event.

What to wear (and bring)

Clothes you don’t mind getting a little clay on, closed-toe shoes if you have them, and hair that can stay out of the way. We provide aprons and tools. Leave fancy rings at home for the night. Clay loves to keep souvenirs.
