Pottery Classes FAQ

Everything you need to know about taking pottery classes at Claya in Denver. Classes are live and enrollable now.

What's included with my class?

Everything you need: clay, all tools, glazes, aprons, kiln firing, and a personal shelf for storage during your session. You also get student open studio: any 3-hour block Saturdays 12–8pm, Mondays 10am–2pm, Mondays 5–9pm, or Thursdays 10am–5pm, during your course.

Do I need any experience?

Not for Intro to Wheel Throwing or Intro to Handbuilding. Your instructor walks you through every step.

How long is a class session?

Each class meets once per week for 6 weeks. Sessions run 2.5 or 3 hours depending on the class:

  • 2.5-hour sessions (15 hours total) at $350. Most Intro to Wheel Throwing sessions and Intro to Handbuilding.
  • 3-hour Thursday 6 to 9 PM Intro to Wheel with Sami (18 hours total) at $375.

Plus student open studio: any 3-hour block Saturdays 12–8pm, Mondays 10am–2pm, Mondays 5–9pm, or Thursdays 10am–5pm, during your course.

How many students are in a class?

Classes are capped at 12 students so everyone gets hands-on attention from the instructor.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty. We provide aprons, but clay can splash. Shorter sleeves work best at the wheel, and you might want to leave rings at home so they stay clean.

Can I buy more clay if I run out?

Yes. Additional clay is available for purchase at the studio. Your included clay is usually enough for the 6-week course, but if you're practicing a lot during open studio you may want more.

Do I get open studio time with my class?

Yes. Your class includes student open studio: any 3-hour block Saturdays 12–8pm, Mondays 10am–2pm, Mondays 5–9pm, or Thursdays 10am–5pm, for the length of your 6-week course, with staff on hand. These are student hours, not public studio hours. See open studio for how it works.

What happens to my finished pieces?

After your final class, your glazed pieces go into the kiln for firing. Firing takes about 1 to 2 weeks. We'll email you when your work is ready for pickup. All firing is included in the class price.

Can I reschedule or cancel a class?

Use dash.clayastudios.com/manage to cancel. Cancel 5 or more calendar days before class day (cutoff: 11:59 PM Denver time on the day 5 calendar days before class day) for a refund minus a $12 cancellation fee. Cancel after that cutoff and before class starts for 6-month store credit. After class starts, there is no refund and no store credit.

What if I want to keep going after my 6-week class?

You can sign up for another live class, like another Intro to Wheel Throwing session with a different instructor, or become a studio member. Studio membership is $175 per month. Founding membership is $140 per month while it lasts. Members get their own keycode to the studio, personal storage, use of wheels and glazes, free bisque firing, and glaze firing free up to 250 cubic inches per month, then $0.05 per cubic inch (allowance resets monthly, no rollover). Where is Claya located?

3440 Walnut Street, Denver CO 80205, in the RiNo Arts District. Street parking is available near the studio on Walnut Street. Public hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Wednesday closed. Sunday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Get directions.
