How to Choose a Pottery Studio in Denver
Denver has some wonderful pottery studios, each with its own personality. Here are a few things worth thinking about as you find the right fit for you.
Class Format
Most studios offer multi-week courses (typically 6-8 weeks) and one-day workshops. Multi-week courses give you time to really build your skills — you'll be amazed at how far you come in just 6 weeks. One-day classes are a great way to try it out and see if you want to dive deeper.
A few things worth asking:
- How many students per class? Smaller classes mean more one-on-one time with the instructor.
- How long is each session? 2.5-3 hours is the sweet spot.
- What's included? Clay, tools, glazes, and firing should all be part of the price.
Studio Access
This is where studios really differ. Some only let you work during scheduled class time. Others offer open studio hours for extra practice. A few offer 24/7 key-code access for members.
If you want to grow quickly, having studio access outside of class makes a world of difference. Pottery rewards practice, and being able to come in on your own time is a game-changer.
Equipment and Space
If you can, visit the studio before signing up. It's nice to get a feel for the space. A few things to notice:
- Wheels: Are there enough for every student? Do they feel well-maintained?
- Kilns: How many? Cone 6 is standard for the functional pottery most people want to make.
- Glaze selection: A good studio offers a range of tested glazes to experiment with.
- Space: Is there room to work comfortably and store your pieces between sessions?
Firing and Turnaround
After you make a piece, it goes through bisque firing, glazing, then glaze firing. This takes 1-3 weeks depending on the studio's kiln schedule. Some studios handle the whole process for you, which is nice — especially when you're starting out.
Pricing
Denver pottery class pricing generally falls between $250-$400 for a 6-week course. That should include clay, tools, glazes, and firing. Memberships range from $100-$250/month depending on access and what's included.
Location and Parking
You'll be going to the studio weekly for at least 6 weeks, so pick somewhere that's convenient. Free parking is always a welcome bonus.
