How Open Studio Works for Pottery Students at Claya
If you’re enrolled in a 6-week pottery class at Claya, you also receive access to Open Studio — unstructured time outside of your weekly class where you can practice, explore new forms, build confidence, and enjoy the creative process at your own pace. Many students say Open Studio is their favorite part of taking pottery classes because it’s where the craft truly starts to “click.”

What Is Open Studio?
Open Studio is self-guided access to the ceramics studio for all currently enrolled 6-week students. It’s a time to:
- Practice wheel-throwing techniques you’ve learned in class
- Trim, refine, and perfect pieces between sessions
- Glaze your bisque-fired work during designated glazing weeks
- Experiment with new shapes, forms, and ideas
- Repeat skills until your hands truly learn them
There is no extra charge — Open Studio is included with your class enrollment as part of your pottery learning experience.
Studio Access for Enrolled Students
All class students receive access to the studio anytime no other pottery classes are running. On the first day of your 6-week class, you’ll receive a personal key-code, giving you the freedom and flexibility to come in and work when you feel inspired (within student Open Studio hours).
Open Studio Hours at Claya
Open Studio hours are designed to give you generous access to the studio while still reserving time blocks for structured classes:
Monday – Friday
Open to all enrolled students anytime except 5:00pm – 8:30pm, when evening pottery classes are in session.
Saturday – Sunday
Open to all enrolled students anytime except 12:00pm – 3:30pm, when weekend classes are in session.
Outside these class windows, the studio is your creative playground. For details and updates:

The Beauty of Practice: Repetition, Exploration & Creative Growth
Pottery and ceramics are crafts built on patience and repetition. Open Studio gives you the space to:
- Explore new forms without pressure or strict timelines
- Throw the same shape again and again until it feels natural
- Make mistakes freely and learn from them — they’re essential to growth
- Slow down and enjoy the rhythm of the wheel
- Develop muscle memory through repetition
Repetition is the key to mastery — and ceramics rewards those who return to the wheel often. Many of your best pieces may come from dozens of imperfect attempts. Good things take time in pottery, and Open Studio is where that progress happens.
A Community Space: Meet Other Potters & Make New Friends
Open Studio isn’t just about making pots — it’s also about community. You’ll often find other students practicing during the same hours, which makes it a great time to:
- Meet fellow potters and classmates
- Share tips, ideas, and glaze inspiration
- Learn by observing how others approach the wheel
- Build friendships with like-minded creative people
We’ve designed Claya to feel like a relaxing, welcoming hangout space. You’ll find a cozy seating area with comfortable couches where you can take a break, sketch ideas, or chat with friends before getting back on the wheel. We want Open Studio to feel unrushed, calm, and creatively energizing.
