Glazing Basics: How Your Pottery Gets Its Color

There's a quiet kind of magic in glazing. After the shaping, the trimming, and that first patient wait through a bisque firing, your piece is ready to take on color. It's the moment a pale, chalky bowl becomes something glassy and glowing — something that feels finished.
For many people new to clay, glazing can feel a little mysterious. What are those milky liquids in the buckets? Why does the color on the jar look nothing like the color on the mug? Why does one piece come out matte and another shiny?
Let's walk through the pottery glazing basics together, gently and without pressure. Whether you're glazing your first mug at Claya or simply curious about how ceramics get their color, this is a lovely part of the process to understand.
What Glaze Actually Is
At its heart, glaze is a thin coating of glass. When you brush or dip a bisqued pot into glaze, you're applying a mixture of finely ground minerals suspended in water. In the kiln, that mixture melts and fuses to the clay body, cooling into a smooth, glassy surface.
Most glazes are made from three basic components working together:
- Silica — the glass former, the ingredient that gives glaze its shine and hardness.
- Flux — materials that help the silica melt at kiln temperatures, since silica alone would need impossibly high heat.
- Alumina — a stabilizer that keeps the melted glaze from running right off your pot.
Color comes from small additions of metal oxides and stains — iron for warm browns and celadons, copper for greens and blues, cobalt for deep blues, manganese for purples and blacks. A tiny bit of one of these minerals can shift a glaze dramatically, which is part of why ceramics feel so alchemical.
Why Glaze Doesn't Look Like the Final Color
This is the part that surprises almost everyone. You dip your piece into what looks like a bucket of chalky pink liquid, and it emerges from the kiln a deep, glossy turquoise. It can feel a little wild the first time.
Before firing, glaze contains raw minerals that haven't yet been transformed by heat. The pinks, grays, and pale beiges you see in the studio buckets are simply the color of those unfired materials suspended in water. Only in the kiln, when temperatures climb past 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, do the minerals melt, react, and develop their true color.
A few things to keep in mind as you glaze:
- Thickness matters. Most glazes are designed to be applied in two or three even coats. Too thin, and the color looks washed out. Too thick, and the glaze can run or crawl.
- Test tiles are your friend. Studios typically keep small fired samples so you can see what each glaze actually looks like after firing.
- Layering creates surprises. One glaze over another can produce beautiful, unexpected results — one of the quiet joys of ceramics.
Matte, Glossy, and Everything In Between
Glazes aren't just about color. They're also about surface — the way light catches a piece, the way it feels in your hand. That finish comes down to the recipe and the firing.
A glossy glaze has a higher ratio of silica and flux, melting into a smooth, reflective surface. These are the glazes that feel wet even when dry, catching light on every curve.
A matte glaze contains more alumina or specific matting agents, creating a softer, more velvety surface. Mattes have a quiet, grounded quality that many potters love, especially on sculptural or minimalist forms.
Then there are the in-between finishes — satin glazes with a gentle sheen, textured glazes that break and pool over edges, and reactive glazes that shift color where they run thick or thin. Each has its own personality, and part of the fun is learning which ones feel like yours.
The Journey From Glaze Bucket to Finished Piece
Once you've glazed your piece, it goes back into the kiln for what's called a glaze firing. This is the second and final firing for most functional pottery, and it's when everything comes together.
Here's the general path a piece takes:
- Bisque firing — the first firing, which hardens the raw clay into a porous state that's ready to absorb glaze.
- Glazing — dipping, brushing, or pouring glaze onto the bisqued piece. The porous clay drinks in the water, leaving a dry coat of minerals behind.
- Wiping the foot — glaze must be cleaned off the bottom of the piece so it doesn't fuse to the kiln shelf during firing.
- Glaze firing — the kiln climbs slowly to its final temperature, holds, and then cools over many hours. Rushing this step can crack pieces or ruin surfaces.
- Unloading — the quiet, exciting moment when you finally see how your piece turned out.
There's always a little uncertainty in this process, and that's part of what makes pottery so grounding. You do your best work, you let go, and you trust the fire to do the rest. Every piece that comes out of the kiln carries a bit of that surrender in it.
