Learn Pinch, Coil & Slab Techniques at Claya

Not everything in pottery happens on the wheel. Handbuilding is one of the oldest and most versatile ways to work with clay — and you don't need any prior experience to start.

At Claya in Denver's RiNo Arts District, our handbuilding classes teach you the three foundational techniques: pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction. By the end of the course, you'll have multiple finished, glazed pieces to take home.

What You'll Learn

  • Pinch pots — Start with a ball of clay and shape it using just your hands. The most intuitive way to connect with the material.
  • Coil building — Roll clay into coils and stack them to create vessels, vases, and sculptural forms of any size.
  • Slab construction — Roll flat sheets of clay and assemble them into mugs, trays, boxes, and architectural forms.
  • Surface decoration — Stamps, carving, textures, and slip application to personalize your pieces.
  • Glazing — Choose from our glaze library to finish your work with color and a food-safe surface.

Who Is Handbuilding For?

Everyone. Handbuilding is approachable for absolute beginners and endlessly deep for experienced makers. If you've been curious about pottery but aren't sure about the wheel, handbuilding is a great place to start. It's also ideal for:

  • People who want more creative control over form and shape
  • Artists coming from other mediums (painting, sculpture, drawing)
  • Anyone who prefers a slower, more meditative pace
  • Students who want to complement their wheel throwing skills

Handbuilding vs. Wheel Throwing

Wheel throwing produces symmetrical, round forms — bowls, cups, vases. Handbuilding lets you create virtually any shape — square plates, irregular sculptures, textured wall pieces, custom mugs. Many serious potters use both techniques. We recommend trying both to see which resonates with you.
